The Afterlife Project.

Created using CLO | 3D to reduce sampling waste.

The Concept.

As well as clothing, how do we keep textiles and trim in use for longer? We believe clothing should be designed with the full lifecycle in mind. Durability for its first life, easy repair for its second and the ability to create new products from its remains in the third. But how?

Designed for deconstruction.

The Barricade Afterlife Rain Jacket, from our own label The Overland, uses Wear2® ECOSTITCHING TECHNOLOGY to enable quick and easy repair of zips and panels. At the end of life the jacket can be quickly disassembled into pre-designed sections ready for cutting and sewing.

Design out waste.

We have designed five products and have carefully incorporated them into the jacket, knowing when it comes to end of life, we have the possibility of making new products no matter what textiles and trim remain usable.

Use everything.

We use as much of the jacket as we can within the new products - for example the front pocket zips are designed to be the same length as the Bumbag zip. The secure mesh pockets with the main front kangaroo pocket become an integral part of the Stash Bag.

And the rest.

Any trim or fabric not used in the new products is used for repair of other Barricade Jackets. The buckles and straps come from end-of-life Osprey backpacks so we incorporate waste streams from other partner brands.

Make again.

After all usable textiles and trim has been harvested from the jacket, we set about making the following products. All come from one jacket!

  • Bumbag

  • Stash bag

  • Two dry bags

  • Tool roll

Conclusion.

We believe that designing out waste at the product development stage is key to working alongside the other principles of durability and ease of repair. Emotional durability is extended, for we propose that these products could be made for the owner of the jacket, rather than resold, thereby extending the relationship between brand and customer, the customer and his/her beloved product.
